Wildfire Mitigation Plans
Electrical corporations are required to prepare and submit Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMPs) to Energy Safety for review and approval. WMPs should describe how the electrical corporation is constructing, maintaining, and operating its electrical lines and equipment in a manner that will minimize the risk of catastrophic wildfire.
In 2018, following the devastating wildfires in 2016 and 2017, the California Legislature passed several bills increasing oversight of the electrical corporations’ efforts to reduce utility-related wildfires. Energy Safety is responsible for evaluating electrical corporations’ wildfire risk reduction efforts mainly through the WMP process. Electrical corporations must submit WMPs assessing their level of wildfire risk and providing plans for wildfire risk reduction to Energy Safety. Energy Safety must ensure utility wildfire mitigation efforts sufficiently address increasing utility wildfire risk.
