Energy Safety and CPUC to Hold Public Briefings on Utility Safety Practices

Four electrical corporations will make presentations, field questions from regulators

SAN FRANCISCO – The Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety (Energy Safety) and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will hold two public safety briefings (also virtual) in July by four of California’s investor-owned utilities. On Thurs., July 6 and Thurs., July 20, both from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the briefings will feature presentations from representatives of California’s utilities on each of their safety practices, safety performance, and related safety efforts.

The July 6 briefing will include presentations from Bear Valley Electric Service (BVES) and Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The July 20 briefing will include presentations from San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Southern California Edison (SCE).

Members of the boards of directors and senior leadership from each of the presenting electrical corporations will discuss their company’s electrical infrastructure safety efforts. Energy Safety Director Caroline Thomas Jacobs and CPUC’s Commissioners will ask questions of the presenters. Public comment will be taken following the presentations and the question-and-answer session.

Energy Safety and the CPUC’s third annual joint safety briefings reinforce the commitment each organization has made to safety and transparency. While a quorum of CPUC Commissioners and their staff may attend these public forums, no official action will be taken by the CPUC at these briefings.

The briefings satisfy the requirement for board-of-director-level reporting under Public Utilities Code section 8389(e)(5)1 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a safety certification.
