Electrical Infrastructure Safety

Electrical Safety Policy Division

The Electrical Safety Policy Division is responsible for analyzing and evaluating the electrical corporations’ annual Wildfire Mitigation Plans, issuing revision notices to the plans when necessary, and approving changes to the plans.

Environmental Science Division

The Environmental Science Division is responsible for evaluating the vegetation management aspects of utility Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMPs), assessing performance in meeting vegetation management-related commitments described in the WMPs, and ensuring that each utility is reducing its risk of igniting a catastrophic wildfire.

Undergrounding and Culture Division

The Undergrounding and Culture Division is responsible for the approval or denial of the large electrical corporations’ voluntary 10-year undergrounding plans and monitoring compliance with those plans. Per SB 884 (McGuire), large electrical corporations may submit for approval a plan for the undergrounding of their electric distribution lines. The Undergrounding and Culture Division also conducts safety culture assessments, reviews executive compensation structures, and evaluates the electrical corporation’s certificate submissions.

Electrical Compliance Division

Energy Safety conducts inspections, audits, and investigations to oversee utility compliance with approved Wildfire Mitigation Plans.
